It is only practical to begin with an operationalized definition of what exactly graphic elements are. Depending on who you talk to there may be a few differences but the basic definition of graphic elements is any visual reference provided in place of text. That is, a graphic element could be a graph, clip art, a table, a symbol, or any other image that can be used to describe something. More specifically, there are five basic graphic elements that make up all other graphic elements.

Desktop publishing refers to the five basic graphic elements, and their applications. These five elements are: lines, shapes, mass, color and texture. The application of the five graphic elements to convey a message is the basis of graphic design. Desktop publishing uses each of the elements in conjunction with the others to create designs that are salable.

Once you have learned what the individual graphic elements mean, and how they are used, you can begin to apply them to real designs in order to create complete images. Each of the basic elements is used to illustrate a specific part of any image, and the manipulation of these elements is what makes up a truly unique image.

Aside from graphs, tables, and clip art, there are also filigree graphic elements. Filigree graphic elements are the more intricate designs seen around the outside of the actual content of an image. The word filigree refers to an adornment, and thus, filigree graphic elements will not be the center of attention in any graphic design. Instead they will be the exquisite designs that add to the overall aura of the image.

With the knowledge of types of graphic elements, and how to use them, you can now begin to make more complicated designs. Filigree graphic elements are only one way to add to the authenticity of your images. Some other more advanced techniques include inlays, symmetry, stencils, and ornamentation.

The better you learn to use the basic graphic elements, the easier it will be for you to acquire the skills to perform more difficult designing techniques. The manipulation of each individual graphic element combined creates the art of desktop publishing. Of course, to use the graphic elements effectively you first have to form a definition of the graphic elements on their own. Then you may be able to advance to more difficult types of graphic design, such as filigree.
